The Journey Behind the Expertise
Brenna Palen has held a deep connection with dogs from a young age. She raised her first puppy for Guide Dogs for the Blind at the age of 15, an experience that catapulted her into a lifelong career of helping create, foster, and repair relationships between dogs and their human counterparts.
This foundation naturally expanded into the rescue sector at age 18. Starting as a volunteer, foster parent, and rescue board member, Brenna quickly focused her attention on behavior assessment and modification. Over the years, she has opened her home to more than 200 foster dogs and 50 kittens. However, it was a resilient black Pitbull named Daisy who truly solidified her path. Spending a full year rehabilitating Daisy through complex behavioral challenges until she was successfully adopted cemented a permanent commitment to canine welfare.
For the past 15 years, Brenna has operated as a professional dog trainer in Colorado, specializing in behavior modification for fear and aggression. Her career encompasses running public classes, managing custom board-and-train programs, and coaching owner-trained service dogs. This extensive background led to a key role at an ADI (Assistance Dogs International) accredited organization as a Client Field Trainer, where she managed over 200 active service dog teams. In this capacity, she traveled widely to perform behavioral evaluations in shelters and breeding programs, design custom task training, instruct placement classes, and host continuing education webinars for industry professionals.
In February, Brenna relocated to the Riviera Maya, Mexico, turning her focus toward street dog populations. Observing these dogs through an ethnocynological lens, she has spent months studying natural social structures, supporting local welfare, and adopting a rescued street dog of her own. This profound connection to street dogs inspired the launch of a specialized behavioral practice designed to support both local and international communities.
Costa Canino was established to bridge the communication gap between natural canine biology and the expectations of modern human households. The practice rejects superficial, quick-fix training that merely masks symptoms. Instead, Costa Canino focuses entirely on the "why" behind a dog's actions, analyzing behavior from a comprehensive psychological, biological, and evolutionary standpoint to resolve struggles at the root.
Operating strictly within the LIMA (Least Intrusive, Minimally Aversive) framework, Costa Canino provides science-backed behavioral consulting tailored to two distinct pillars:
Virtual International Support: Dedicated remote coaching and strategic decompression programs for rescue organizations, fosters, and street dogs transitioning into Canadian, American, and international homes.
Private Riviera Maya Consulting: 1-on-1 lifestyle coaching and behavioral modification for pet owners and rescue advocates within the Riviera Maya.
Whether a dog is a beloved family companion mastering real-world reliability or a street-born survivor navigating the intense sensory overload of a new country, their biological blueprint remains the same. Costa Canino provides the clear, sophisticated guidance required to foster genuine safety, understanding, and trust between dogs and their handlers.
